05.26 Illustrated Music

Creation of an illustrated program for a cello concert.

Each piece performed was accompanied by an illustration and a short text: several mediums (colored pencils, watercolor, charcoal, fineliner) were used to best reflect the character of each of the pieces. The images create an entry point into classical music for people less familiar with it, providing them with a visual aid to better imagine stories related to the pieces they hear.

I. Stravinsky - Suite italienne

Jour de fête, le peuple célèbre tandis qu’une procession solennelle et noble monte vers le château. On retrouve les caractères des différents mouvements de la suite: arrivée triomphante d’un chevalier (introduction), jeunes filles dansantes (tarantella), foule, saltimbanques et montreur d’ours (Aria), les cloches de l’église que l’on entend dans Minuetto ou encore l’horloge qui rythme toute la Serenata.

M. de Falla - Suite populaire espagnole

Un village encore endormi, en fin de matinée. Il fait déjà chaud et lourd, la place est déserte. Des objets oubliés ici et là témoignent de la fête de la veille où se sont jouées plusieurs histoires : le draps, taché, abandonné au sol, le landeau où une mère a tenté de faire s’endormir son enfant, le panier que la jeune fille amoureuse balançait en chantonnant, l’alcool qui a attisé la rage de la femme trahie par son amant, le pin vert devant lequel une femme a déversé son chagrin. Au fond de la place, la fenêtre, devant laquelle un jeune homme a déclamé son amour, est toujours ouverte.

J. S. Bach - 2e suite pour violoncelle seul en ré mineur

Une personne en deuil est assise dans un train. Tout est terne, silencieux et seulement peuplé de fantômes. Pourtant, alors que la vie, pour elle, semble en suspens, le train avance toujours. Elle réalise avec surprise, en regardant par la fenêtre, qu’à l’extérieur la vie continue, toujours aussi colorée qu’avant. Par contraste avec le vide qu’elle ressent, la beauté du monde lui paraît alors exarcerbée, presque iréelle.

Les premiers rayons de soleil descendent sur la forêt et soudain tout s’anime ; les couleurs deviennent plus vives, on perçoit le bruit de la rivière, les reflets du soleil sur la rosée, le bruissement du vent dans les feuilles...etc. D’un autre côté, la scène garde un aspect plus hésitant et surnaturel, propre au moment où on émerge du sommeil sans être encore complètement présent.

12.25 Improvisation Box

Creation of music teaching materials in the form of a games box, inspired by children's magic sets filled with all kinds of magic tricks. All the games share a common theme : Improvisation, and were assembled to encourage students' curiosity and interest in this musical practice. Approximately half of the box's contents come from existing board games and illustrated books with modified rules, while the rest were created specifically for this project.

02.26 Live-drawing

The theme of the concert was the relation between music and images, presented during the concert in multiple forms, depending on each piece: I created the drawing during Hindemith's Sonata for Flute and Piano. I based this illustration on several themes. First, the composer, Paul Hindemith, enjoyed drawing a lot and had somehow a predilection for caricatured drawings of lions. Also, the first and third movements of the sonata are fast and joyful, while the second movement, is the opposite and evokes war, in a much darker tone. In discussion with the musician, we decided to propose a drawing in three stages:

- First movement: Two lion cubs playing together, line drawing, 5 minutes

- Second movement: their father, lying on his side, dead, line drawing, 5 minutes

- Third movement: watercolor coloring, 4 minutes

04.22-06.24 Concert Posters

For three consecutive years, I designed the concert poster for a children's choir in the canton of Fribourg: Les Chardonnerets. Each poster was created after many discussions with the choir director, in order to best reflect the theme of each concert. This is why each poster has a very different style.
